Parkland Parents Urge School Board to Fund Dual Language Program - Parkland Talk, February 26, 2023
Who we are.
We are a group of parents and supporters of the Dual Language program at Riverglades Elementary School in Parkland, Florida. Dual Language is an amazing English/Spanish Two-Way-Immersion program designed to run from Kindergarten through 12th grade in the Broward County Public Schools. We love the program, the teachers, and the incredible opportunity for bilingual education in public schools that it offers our kids. Although the program provides a multitude of benefits for participating students and attracts student enrollment in Broward County Public Schools, it lacks a guaranteed funding allocation from the county and state. As a result, it is chronically underfunded and undersupported. At Riverglades, this lack of funding and support means that the program has faced challenges with teacher hiring and retention, curriculum enrichment, academic assistance, and long-term program planning. In fact, that lack of support means that the program's continuation into middle school for the current class of 5th graders at Riverglades Elementary is at risk. We, the Friends of Riverglades Dual Language, are working together to change that.
